The
government in Tabora region, has congratulated Tanzania Association of
Women Leaders in Agriculture and Environment (TAWLAE) members for their
effort towads fostering youth and women socio economic well being and
elimination of child labour in tobacco farms as a result to child endurance.
These
remarks were given by Tabora regional commissioner, Fatuma Mwassa, who
was represented by Dr. Phillips Ntiba, during the official opening of
TAWLAE annual general meeting which was held yesterday in the region.
Speaking
in the congregation, Mwassa extended her gratitude to TAWLAE management
for the invitation and urged the organization to continue empowering
women and youth at all levels academically, socially and economically so
as to ensure that gender responsive policies are in place for the betterments of the nation.
‘‘I
appreciate for your ideal decision to conduct your annual general
meeting in our region, this is an opportunity, it’ll surely benefit us
alot, you are most welcome, may God be with you throughout your
meeting,’’ said Mwassa.
Mwassa
extended her congratulations to TAWLAE management as they managed to
sponsor some of their co-members to Masters and PHD levels and promoting
youth and women economical development by offering modern agricultural
skills, entrepreneurship and animal husbandary skills.
Mwassa
complemented that TAWLAE members are highly concerned to the well being
of the community, for this extent, the issue of fighting against child
labour is pattern and parcel to their activities, reasearch shows that child involvement in hard labour is
geared by poverty as the root cause for most tobacco growing families,
hence, highlighted the need of more efforts towards poverty reduction.
‘‘I
encourage you to keep on addressing all important issues, especially
those pertaining to eradication of poverty, agricultural development and
environmental conservation plus linking women farmers who are the main labour force and other key players in the country. I also argue you to continue supporting school children, especially those who are from poor families in rural areas, ’’ she added.
PROSPER
project director, Mr. Bahati Nzunda, congratulated the good job done by
these profesional women in collaboration with the project and added
that their objectives should be appreciated and supported so as to accelerate their efforts on poverty eradication in the community as the route cause of child labour. .. ‘‘We are proud of having hard working partners’’, he added.
When
speaking in the congregation, TAWLAE chairman, Ms Sophia Mlote,
clarified that the organization has targeted to promote livelihood of a
child and youth plus empowering women professionals in various
disciplines so as to promote women at all levels academically,
economically and socially.
Mlote added that apart from empowering professional women, TAWLAE, has offered full educational scholarship to a total of 2,177
girls, at a secondary school level and 580 at a primary school level
and more than 10,125 children were removed from child labour hence
returned to school.
Meanwhile,
Mlote complemented that the organization has targeted to support and
improve various agricultural crops such as cassava, sweet potatoes and vegetables, along
with processing, packaging and storage of the products, so as to
benefit different women entreprenuers, hence transform their economical
means.
TAWLAE also targets to offer vivid training for both youth and women on entrepreneurship skills, modern agriculture and animal husbandry so as to empower them economically plus providing conselling on sexual transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS in rural areas.
